The first film ever made was recorded at
Oakwood Grange in Roundhay in Leeds West Yorkshire on October 14, 1888 the
film has become known as The
Roundhay Garden Scene and is all of 2 seconds long. It was made
by, Frenchmen, Louis Le Prince. The film however, was quickly followed by
tragedy. Within 10 days one of the actresses and L*ouis Le Prince's mother
in law was 10. Another of the protagnosists and Louis Le Prince's eldest son
Adolphe was shot dead in a New York in 1902.
As for Louis Le Prince himself he planned demonstration of his
work in New York but this never happened. Before ever reaching the States
Le Prince boarded a train in Dijon on 18th September 1890 bound for Paris.
He never arrived in Paris. He disappeared and was not heard of again. What
happened to him still remains a mystery.
Le Prince has become known as the forgotten inventor of film.
His work preceeded the Lumiere brothers and Edison by some least 7 years.
One other of his films survives Traffic
crossing Leeds Bridge. Which is a film as the title might suggest, of
traffic crossing Leeds Bridge
